KonMari Method: The Kitchen, Part 1

After reading “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo, I have been inspired to declutter and simplify our home. My husband and I have found value and importance in living a minimalist lifestyle and we are making changes in our lives everyday to embrace this new way of living.

In this video I share with you what our kitchen looked like before I implemented the KonMari method, as well as all of the kitchen items I am getting rid of.

Next week, I will be posting Part 2 which will show our newly simplified and organized kitchen.

Thanks for watching!

Your before kitchen looks like what I would want! Wow! You would have a panic attack of some sort if you saw mine! Lol! But you have a giant kitchen and a giant walk in pantry (who has that?!), so it's super easy for you to be neat and tidy.

Hi. I have watched countless videos on decluttering, tidying and now on Konkani method and I am reading her book but what I don't understand how does one manage to do this method when you have a regular life and family! I mean for me to take every item of one category out and lay it on the floor would be a disaster my toddlers would wreck havoc and it would take me forever, please share some practical tips on how to do it

You inspire me to minimalize even more! I have just started to donate a lot of stuff that I didn't even knew I had or just didn't use. I live in a pretty small house so it's not a lot of stuff but still too much for me 🙂 and it feels so great getting rid of it! By August my home will be minimalistic and ready for my first baby 😀 Take care and thank you for your videos! // Malin

Not sure if you have pets, but some of that cute glassware you got rid of is similar to what I've started to use as pet dishes. After I finished Kon Mari, my pets have much nicer things…lol

KonMari is not about minimalism, although I think minimalism is great.  It is about what SPARKS JOY. Hold each item in your hands. Does this spark joy? That is the criteria. The focus is on what you KEEP. "We should be choosing what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of" (page 41). "Focusing solely on throwing things away can only bring unhappiness".

Your before is like everyone else's after.  🙂 I'm just trying to get my house down to your before pics.  And I switched to all corellle. I really do enjoy it. I love what KonMari is doing to my home. When I first saw your video, I felt discouraged. But then I realized I just need to run my own race. Also, you have 4 times the number of cabinets that I do, so I need to realize that.

Your corelle mugs should be fine, I could not find any reputable sources to corroborate the lead theory. Their website states that minute quantities may be present in decorations which those plain white mugs do not have.

OMG– I live in a small apartment in Brooklyn. Your kitchen is three or four times as large as mine! Your countertops BEFOREHAND are pristine. I can't imagine how better organized the part 2 will be.  Congrats on your excellent process!

So I thought I was doing this method the right way just by watching videos here on youtube … well I got the book on audio and had 2 very long trips to take this week so I finished it in 24 hours basically — I've gone through and gotten rid of so many things already even AFTER i did an initial "purge"! Your thoughts are mine, too — I am so ready to live a simple life without mess and stuff! :)

Great job Jess, it is so encouraging to hear how the book has helped you gain peace in your life! I feel the same exact way, to know there is nothing in my home I don't use or love is a wonderful feeling! :)
