KonMari #3: Front Closet BEFORE & AFTER

Published by:

Follow along, even better, join me, as I complete the KonMari method of tidying and organizing our entire home. With three children age four and under, a dog, and a husband this would normally be a seemingly impossible undertaking, yet with insightful know-how of best-selling author Marie Kondo I know it will be manageable and even better, exciting and life changing.

This series will take you through the entire method described and explained in Kondo’s book titled, ‘The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up” through my vlog as I go.

It’s Spring…pretty much and coincidentally the routine task of switching out our winter, outdoor attire for our spring and summer accessories lines up perfectly with the last section of the clothing portion in the KonMari method. I’ve pulled all the seasonal, outdoor clothing – purged, re-organized and made the most of the small closet space I’m working with. It all worked out well and as always, I’m beyond excited by the simplified changes that have *finally* pulled this space together for us!
Up next: Books!

**New videos will be posted, minimally, once a week as I complete the method step-by-step. I will be “real”, honest and forthcoming with how I am fairing out.

I’d love for you to join me in this journey – it will be fun and motivating. All positive, constructive and well-intended comments are welcome in the spirit of helping myself and others during this series! I would love your input, suggestions, feedback – including how I’m organizing this series.

Cheers to better, more organized days ahead!

BOOK: The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo http://amzn.to/1OQVASk

Decluttering/ Organizing Tips – The KonMari Method Overview

o Clean/organize everything at once vs in small increments. When you do it at once there will be a dramatic difference that you will feel and it will be life changing
o This will end the cycle of clutter
o I think the perfect time to do this is if you’re moving or over a long weekend

o Most important aspect of tiding is discarding. More stuff is more stress in our lives and the reason things constantly get messy is because we have too much stuff

TIDY BY CATEGORY vs by room/area
o The reason for this is that we have one type of item in multiple locations and if you miss items you will not get everything repeat the same patterns
o Her categories are: clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous), mementos

o Start the process by gathering every item from category you own and put it into a big pile
o Only keep items that spark joy – hold it and feel your reaction to it

HOW TO ORGANIZE – Clothing Organization
o Most clothing should be folded versus hung up – it saves space and also forces you to have more interaction with each item
o How to fold clothes:
• Fold lengthwise towards center to make a long rectangle
• Fold the short ends together and continue until the height matches the drawer height
• Instead of storing them on top of each other, stack them! This way you can see every item and it saves space
o Hanging items
• Hang items in same category side by side, dress section, jacket section, etc
• Heavy items on left going to lighter items on the right
• Heavy means most length and heavier fabrics and dark in color
o Seasonal clothes
• She doesn’t believe in seasonal clothes – all items should be kept out. This prevents hoarding clothes

Top I’m wearing – American Apparel
Leggings – Lululemon
Any other questions please ask in the comments 🙂
Let me know if you’d like me to organize other categories of items from the book!
