Host: Let’s put it off! Cleaning and organizing your home. Fox 5’s Shally Zomorodi is in Leucadia this morning showing us tips on how to keep it clean and wow, first up is the closet!

Shally: Hi and good morning everyone. Put your hands up if your house is completely disorganized. Yeah look, all of our hands are up and you struggle with getting your home actually looking nice, looking and feeling good. So this morning we are showing you how to reorganize your home. Obviously you recognize this face, Kathi Burns, founder of Add Space To Your Life. She’s here and we’ve invaded Lisa Knight’s house in Leucadia. We’ve invaded this so we can reorganize your home starting with your closet. What does your closet usually look like?

Lisa: It’s a wreck. There’s usually shoes on the floor, there’s laundry, there’s an ironing board, there’s a vacuum cleaner (a wet/dry vac). There’s just a height of industry in here.

Shally: That sounds like my closet. Alright Kathi, help us, help us! So take us in there, show us what are some really easy tips that people at home can do to straighten things up.

Kathi: Okay well the first thing is you never want anything on the floor. The reason being is that you want to have the floor clean so that you can vacuum. And things that tend to fall on the floor in closets are lost and gone forever and you don’t get them anyhow. So the very thing that I did was pick the pile of shoes up out of the broken basket and put them into a hanging shoe basket. This is the size that works great for gents, for women you can see over here we have the smaller sizes and they work great. It’s a wonderful thing because you can fit ten pairs of shoes in this small amount of this whole space, 4 inches basically across.

Shally: Amazing. Okay what else can we do?

Kathi: That’s the first one. The hamper — I always recommend as soon as I see the hamper lid, I take the lid off because what happens with the lid on top of the hamper, clothes get put on the lid and then the clothes don’t go into the hamper. So it becomes a little holding zone and everything gets piled on there. So if you have a hamper with a lid, I’d say definitely take it off.

Shally: I know a whole bunch of ladies at home going right now, “Yes! Now if we can just get the men to put the clothes in the hamper!”

Kathi: And the kids!

Lisa: The clothes in the hamper is a beautiful thing!

Shally: Alright, got another tip for us?

Kathi: Absolutely! We want to hang slacks with slacks, shirts with shirts, coats with coats. The top pole right here, the top shelf is usually not that functional so what you can do with it is you can stack things like the linens, blue jeans that are folded nicely on top as well as sweatshirts. Sweatshirts are bulky and take up too much pole space anyhow. So that’s what will happen is when it goes into winter you’ll have all the sweaters and sweatshirts on the top shelf.

Shally: Okay, this looks good. Thank you! How do you like your closet? Do you love it?

Lisa: I think it’s exciting!! Thank you Kathi!

Shally: Oh my gosh, wait til we get to the bathroom and kitchen! Okay so up next we are going over to the bathroom. I can’t wait for this, everybody’s bathroom is a mess. You don’t want to miss this. We’ll send it back to you guys.

How To Organize Your Home, Part 2: A Small Entryway Or Hall Closet

In this second installment in our How To Organize Your Home series, I take you on a tour of my tiny entryway closet and show how I organize it so that it is efficient and useful for our family of seven.

When we bought our new house, we were disappointed to see just how small and poorly designed the entryway closet was. There really wasn’t space to even put coats, much less anything else, so I redesigned the entryway and closet to make it much more useful for our family.

Some people recommend more elaborate processes, but I have 5 kids and some parts of those systems, no matter how brilliant they seem to adults, completely break down with real kids in real families. Of course, you may have your own system that works for you, but here is how I organize my entryway hall closet. Hopefully you will get a few good ideas you can use!

Our last video was a tour of the entryway itself and if you missed that one, you can see it here:

Here are some of the main points in this video:

0:49 I don’t believe in making kids put coats on coat hangers because it requires extra steps and no matter how much you hound them, they just won’t do it. So why make it difficult on yourself? Instead, develop a more efficient system.

1:11 I showed you in our previous video about how to make a more kid friendly coat hanger for all of our coats in our entryway.

1:24 I use the coat closet for all the extra little things.

1:28 Vacuum and accessories

1:45 A little vacuum that we use for the stairs to make it easier for the kids to do their chores.

2:08 I’m going to run through here and show you where everything is.

2:11 I keep all of my extra hats, gloves and things in this plastic zipper bag that came with a sheet set. It keeps everything clean and organized. In the winter, I often keep this in the car so we have extra hats and gloves available at all times.

3:05 I have these extra hats. To make storage simpler, I put all of the hats inside one of the other hats so they’re all stored in a nice neat package.

3:33 I draped the scarves over the coat rod, which in this closet is poorly designed for coats anyway.

3:43 This is our swimming bag, with all of our swimming gear easy to grab and go.

4:00 These are my other bags if I need something to grab when we’re going to the mountains or somewhere where I need to bring a lot of little things.

4:22 Over here, I have all of our umbrellas. I just used a nail – no fancy hooks, but they’re nicely organized and easy to grab when we need them.

5:00 In the back corner, we have my daughter’s bow and arrows.

5:07 Here, I have more scarves in another comforter bag.

5:34 This is my favorite part of the whole thing. This is a shoe holder, but we use it to store all of our gloves, along with a couple of hats and rain ponchos. This works really well for organizing all of the kids. It is see through, so we can see whose gloves are where.

7:00 If you have a smaller family, or if you live in a warmer climate, put your flip flops, sunscreen or other small items you’d like to have easily accessible in here.

7:45 This works for us. You may have a different family size or different family needs, so do some experimenting and see what works for you. And by all means, if you saw something here that might help you, be sure to integrate it into your closet organization system!

7:54 Tell me in the comments how you organize your coat closet to keep everything running smoothly without a huge mess.
