How To Make An Easy Homemade Storage Out Of Ziploc Bags

In this video, Jill demonstrates how to make a very useful, cheap and super easy storage organizer out of Ziploc bags. This organizer is useful for many things, like storing thread, buttons and sewing supplies, medications for travel, small toys, snacks for road trips or hiking, storing small items in diaper bags and more! If you have a need to store any small items that are often easily lost, like many things that end up in kitchen junk drawers, this is a great storage option.

Jill demonstrates how to make this Ziploc bag organizer out of sandwich sized bags, but you could also use the large freezer bags as well, depending on what you need to store. Also, you can use just a few bags or as many as 10 per organizer.

Here are some of the main points in this video:

0:04 Some of the things that are easier to organize with this storage organizer.

0:33 I stapled together several Ziploc baggies. Be sure to buy the type of zip top bags with the zipper on top and not the press and seal ones or it will be too difficult to use.

0:50 How I make one of these organizers. I start with the Ziploc baggies

1:04 I cut a piece of card stock to use to hold it together to keep the baggies from pulling and tearing.

1:25 Stapling the baggies together.

1:44 You can make them with as many or few bags as you need.

2:05 More great uses for this organizer

How To Organize Your Home Part 1: The Entryway

Join us for a tour of our home’s entry area as we share how it is organized and why I organized it this way. This organization system is very easy for even the young children to use and is a lot less frustrating than other kinds of closet or entryway organizing because it’s a nice looking system that the kids will actually use.

It is functional, with a designated place for each person’s items and I was also able to decorate it in a way that is cozy and feels good.

Each family member has a designated set of decorative hooks to hang coats, scarves, mittens, purses and backpacks, there is a designated spot for each person’s shoes and even a basket for items that are waiting to be returned to the store or delivered to someone.

Join us for this brief tour and then share your great organizing ideas in the comments below!

Here are some of the main points in this video:

0:57 When we moved into this house, we had this little tiny closet for 6 people to store shoes, coats and everything. There was no way that as going to work and I had to come up with another storage system for coats and shoes.

1:41 How we organize our coats

2:06 Showing and talking about our coat system

2:13 I attached 2 boards this way – boards that i got for free – and I attached these cute decorative hooks from Hobby Lobby.

2:52 Everybody knows where his or her stuff goes.

2:59 Decorated with pictures from when we were all 6 months old

3:25 Storing shoes – Neatly placed on mats in case the shoes are dirty

3:55 How I re-created a decorative letter when I needed another one

:06 I added a shorter section for our youngest son, who was 4 years old at the time and it worked out perfectly because he couldn’t quite reach the original hook height.

5:59 I love old windows. My neighbor was moving and gave me a free mirror that looks like an old window, which looks great here!

6:20 A lovely gardening picture that was a gift from my aunt.

6:39 Funny sayings and encouragement for everyone to see just before they leave home.

7:20 My basket for things that need to be returned to the store or are waiting to be returned or delivered to people

7:49 That’s how we organize our entryway. Comment below and share your tips and ideas about how you organize your entryway!

How To Organize Your Home, Part 2: A Small Entryway Or Hall Closet

In this second installment in our How To Organize Your Home series, I take you on a tour of my tiny entryway closet and show how I organize it so that it is efficient and useful for our family of seven.

When we bought our new house, we were disappointed to see just how small and poorly designed the entryway closet was. There really wasn’t space to even put coats, much less anything else, so I redesigned the entryway and closet to make it much more useful for our family.

Some people recommend more elaborate processes, but I have 5 kids and some parts of those systems, no matter how brilliant they seem to adults, completely break down with real kids in real families. Of course, you may have your own system that works for you, but here is how I organize my entryway hall closet. Hopefully you will get a few good ideas you can use!

Our last video was a tour of the entryway itself and if you missed that one, you can see it here:

Here are some of the main points in this video:

0:49 I don’t believe in making kids put coats on coat hangers because it requires extra steps and no matter how much you hound them, they just won’t do it. So why make it difficult on yourself? Instead, develop a more efficient system.

1:11 I showed you in our previous video about how to make a more kid friendly coat hanger for all of our coats in our entryway.

1:24 I use the coat closet for all the extra little things.

1:28 Vacuum and accessories

1:45 A little vacuum that we use for the stairs to make it easier for the kids to do their chores.

2:08 I’m going to run through here and show you where everything is.

2:11 I keep all of my extra hats, gloves and things in this plastic zipper bag that came with a sheet set. It keeps everything clean and organized. In the winter, I often keep this in the car so we have extra hats and gloves available at all times.

3:05 I have these extra hats. To make storage simpler, I put all of the hats inside one of the other hats so they’re all stored in a nice neat package.

3:33 I draped the scarves over the coat rod, which in this closet is poorly designed for coats anyway.

3:43 This is our swimming bag, with all of our swimming gear easy to grab and go.

4:00 These are my other bags if I need something to grab when we’re going to the mountains or somewhere where I need to bring a lot of little things.

4:22 Over here, I have all of our umbrellas. I just used a nail – no fancy hooks, but they’re nicely organized and easy to grab when we need them.

5:00 In the back corner, we have my daughter’s bow and arrows.

5:07 Here, I have more scarves in another comforter bag.

5:34 This is my favorite part of the whole thing. This is a shoe holder, but we use it to store all of our gloves, along with a couple of hats and rain ponchos. This works really well for organizing all of the kids. It is see through, so we can see whose gloves are where.

7:00 If you have a smaller family, or if you live in a warmer climate, put your flip flops, sunscreen or other small items you’d like to have easily accessible in here.

7:45 This works for us. You may have a different family size or different family needs, so do some experimenting and see what works for you. And by all means, if you saw something here that might help you, be sure to integrate it into your closet organization system!

7:54 Tell me in the comments how you organize your coat closet to keep everything running smoothly without a huge mess.
